They will also participate in a bioinformatics project focused on analyzing newly assembled willow genomes to investigate sex chromosome evolution and genomic diversity across Arctic populations.

Mentored onsite by Ian Shuman under PI Jesse Krause, James will be involved with monitoring bird phenology and nests, bird banding, and determining reproductive success. James will be assisting with the collection of blood for genetic sequencing to determine relatedness, and to quantify stable isotopes to determine the degree of energy transfer between stream and terrestrial ecosystems. He will also collect feces to determine diet composition, and feathers to compare diet and growth rates. His motivation for continued learning is to be a positive role model for his 11 year old son Elias.
